Cursive to Word Processor to HTML in School

I’m out of touch with what’s going on in public schools. I believe they have stopped teaching cursive writing, which I now only use to sign my name in a very illegible way. I could have done that without learning cursive. We were beginning to learn Word Processing on the Apple 2 computers when I was in elementary. It was all very painful and useless, since the word processors I used in college were incomparable to the one I used in elementary school. Logo was more worthwhile, FWIW.
Now, as the trend to publish on the web continues we are seeing an increased need for HTML skills. Look at all the fun kids are having on MySpace. We need to teach them to do it right and put an end to their fun! But seriously, this IS the new business communication. HTML is a mature and royalty free standard. Why are some schools teaching MS Word or OpenOffice? These will be extinct or totally revamped in a few years anyway. The complex and feature rich software will die like the dinosaurs. Simple standards like HTML will live through change like bacteria.

I don’t use Word to blog and neither does anyone else. It’s an overly complex turd that just gets in the way. Monospace font is to the writers eye what classical music is to the ear. It generates clarity of thought through simple patterns. If I want to write something, as in really write something, do I care whether the font is green or black, italicized or quoted, indented or double-spaced? That crap gets in the way. To steal a famous line, it’s a fisher-price activity center for adults.
Using Word to write prose is like signing your name with a Gutenberg press. The elements of design and content are forever split. Any tool which mixes them is a complex and dying dinosaur.

To be fair, Word is, and has been for the past decade, the de facto standard for creating documents in work and scholarly environments. And there will always be a lot more people who need to create simple documents rather than web pages. Unless you think Microsoft is going to poof disappear tomorrow, Office is here to stay. I know people(including myself!) who are still on Office 2000, are perfectly happy with it, and will continue using it for the forseeable future.

FWIW, I don’t know anything about LaTex but this guy thinks it’s an open standard worth embracing. One thing I do know, separation of content and style will help productivity for even simple documents.
It’s not such a big deal now but I remember my Word documents growing to 15-20MB in college, despite always using ‘Save As’. That was a pain considering I used a 166 MHz Pentium with 16MB of RAM (state of the art was like 32MB of RAM then). What a victory it was when the print spooler clicked over to page 2 after an eternity of hourglass-cursor, and the printer roared to life. It just might print this time!
